10 Lesser Known Instagram Features You Didn't Know

Instagram, as most of us know by now, is a photo and video-sharing social network platform. It boasts of more than 1 billion users already.

Instagram also has some features which many are not fully aware of. If you know them, your Instagram experience is bound to get better! So let’s take a look at them.


1. Lux Edit

Instagram is not a photo-editing app. However, their “Lux” feature provides an array of edit options. You will find this slider in the editing options tab, displayed as a half-sun (as shown in the above image). The contrast is automatically adjusted, giving the picture a crisp & sharp look.


2. Use Offline

This will elicit a “hoorah” from Android users! Because, Instagram app in Android boasts of the offline mode, which isn’t there in iPhone. If your Smartphone has Android 7.0 Nougat installed, you can take photos & edit them even when offline; as soon as you are online, they will get posted on their own. You can also comment on or like a post; they will get updated the moment you are online.


3. Remove your tag from others’ photos

Option 1 – go to photos, select “photo options” from options & select “remove me from photo.”

Option 2 – Select “Hide me from photo.” This works if you don’t want to annoy your friend by removing the tag! Because, unknown to them, your image won’t be visible under their “tagged photos” page.


4. Clear Search History

You may not want your friends to browse Instagram and see that your searches were for wild stuff…..or maybe for your ex! To prevent this, clear your search history. In your profile, select “Options,” scroll to the bottom & choose “Clear Search History.”


5. Use Less Data

You use Instagram primarily for videos & photos…thereby enabling high data consumption. To prevent this, go to your profile, select “Cellular Data Use” under Options, and click “Use Less Data.” Your subsequent uploads may take longer, but the data consumption will be considerably lower.


6. Create Collages

Till now, you would resort to 3rd party apps to create a collage. But of late, Instagram has launched “Layout,” which is a linked app. This allows you to create collages smoothly & upload to Instagram. This facility is available to iOS and Android. Layout can be accessed via its own app, or through Instagram. After you have decided which photo to edit, press the collage button.

Layout gives you a choice of 9 different collage patterns. They are adjustable with each panel size, and you can also select the order in which you would like the pictures to appear. Options of flip, insert border etc. are also available.


7. See all posts liked by you

It might have happened to many of you that you are desperately looking for an Instagram post that you liked sometime back. You are not sure who posted it…..so you search through all the posts and it takes eons to locate it.

But Instagram has a feature that can save you all that trouble!

Go to your profile, click Options, select “Posts you’ve liked”….and bingo!

8. Change order of filters

You have a few favourite Instagram filters. And you would like them to show up first. And you want to hide filters you dislike.

Go ahead! Here’s how:-

  • Select the photo/video you’d like to post
  • Select “Manage” in Filter section
  • Press & hold to move your favourite filters up
  • Uncheck the box beside the disliked filter

9. Filter inappropriate comments

We all know how active troll armies are on Instagram. And some trolls are genuinely mean. You wouldn’t want them to appear!

Go to user settings in your profile and select “Comment Controls.” This enables to block & hide offensive comments and create filters for chosen words/phrases.
